Enhancing Productivity with Multi Crane System for an Industrial Equipment Repair Facility

Service Crane Company recently partnered with an industrial equipment repair facility to enhance their operations with the installation of two bridge cranes. This case study outlines the challenges faced, innovative solutions implemented, and the substantial benefits realized by the facility.

The feedback from our client highlights the success of the project process and our commitment to excellence:

“The service technician arrived on time, was professional, had a good understanding of the job, was efficient, and brought everything necessary to complete the job. The service provided by the technician, salesperson, and customer service representative was excellent, and the quote was submitted in a timely manner. Service Crane understands my needs as a customer and works to do what is necessary to meet/exceed my expectations. They arrived as planned, got unloaded, and went to work. We had a little bump in the beginning, but they corrected it and moved right along. They worked around us very well. They cleaned up when they were done. They made sure that we knew how to operate the unit. This is the third crane that you have put in for us. Very satisfied with everything. I cannot think of anything Service Crane can do to improve their service.”

  • Application

The project began with the installation of a single 2-ton top-running single girder bridge crane system. The facility’s team desired the crane to traverse ½ of their repair bay. Two years later they decided they were ready to have crane coverage over the entire bay; however, a column situated in the middle of the bay presented a significant obstacle. Despite this challenge, our team engineered a solution that would allow a single structure to support the two cranes.

  • Challenges

A column in the middle of the bay impeded the desired crane path and would not allow the crane to run the full length of the building. To resolve this challenge, we designed a larger column for the center of the runway.

In an effort to save the customer money, we supported the existing runway, removed the column from the end of the existing runway, installed a larger set of columns and extended the runway to the end of the building. We then reused the original columns a the end of the new runway.

With the runway in place, we installed a second top-running single girder bridge crane. This multi-crane setup significantly improved the facility’s productivity while preserving the structural integrity of their building.

  • Solution

This project stands out due to our innovative approach to electrification and crane positioning:

    • Electrification Strategy: Instead of a single electrification system, we installed two separate systems. Half of both the east and west end of the runways  electrified, utilizing the most convenient disconnect locations. This also allowed for the systems to be locked out independent from one another.
    • Shared Columns: By increasing the center column size and relocating the existing column, we eliminated the need for an additional set of columns to support the new runway saving the customer additional expenses and valuable floor space.
